The Brew House (Hotel Emma)
The crown jewel of Pearl architecture, the original 1894 brew house has been transformed into Hotel Emma, a luxury boutique hotel. The massive brew kettle serves as the lobby centerpiece, and industrial pipes, gauges, and equipment have been incorporated throughout. The adaptive reuse was led by Roman and Williams, who preserved the building's industrial soul while adding contemporary luxury.
The Full Goods Building
Originally used to store finished beer products, this massive structure has been converted into a mixed-use space housing restaurants and retail. The exposed brick walls, timber beams, and industrial-scale windows create dramatic interior spaces that honor the building's working heritage.
The Bottling Department
Where Pearl Beer was once bottled and prepared for distribution, you will now find some of the district's best restaurants. The high ceilings and open floor plans that once accommodated bottling lines now create airy, inviting dining spaces.
The Smokestack
The Pearl Brewery's iconic smokestack remains the district's most recognizable landmark and can be seen from across San Antonio. It has been carefully preserved and illuminated, serving as a beacon for the district.
Contemporary Additions
New construction at the Pearl has been designed to complement rather than compete with the historic buildings. The CIA San Antonio campus, residential buildings, and commercial spaces use materials and scales that echo the industrial heritage while bringing modern functionality and sustainability.
The River Walk Connection
The Museum Reach extension of the San Antonio River Walk, which runs through the Pearl, is itself an architectural achievement. Public art installations, landscaped paths, and pedestrian bridges create a seamless connection between the Pearl and downtown San Antonio.
